WELCOME  TO  HISTORY DEPARTMENT

Department of History was established along with establishment of the college in the year 1981 . Initially it was in Intermediate level , affiliated to Utkal University . Degree classes were opened in the year 1988 with pass subject . Honours in Degree classes were opened in the year 1994 with 16 seats and further increased to 32 seats in 2015-16 . At present the subject is available to the students as Honours , Pass .

Relevance of the subjects:

            The study of history like visiting strange far off place. Like travel, It takes as out of the narrowness & commonplace event of everyday like in to a strange and wonderful panorama .It is the story of development of human society. It is     & letter. Philosophy & religion adventure and administration, Culture and way of life and all other as peers relating of man’s significant activities .History helps us to understand how the world developed in to what it is . If links the present with past and enables as to see how man has discovered better ways of living and both up    societies which we call civilization .

            History makes man wise and enables him to strengthen his virtue. It promotes in man the power to imagine circumstances and condition other than his own. A wise man learns from his own experience but a  wise man learns from experiences of others. History presents us the rich heritage of past through which we know what factors promote human happiness and welfare. History is a shop where intellectual merchandise   of all kind is available & it is up to us to buy whole we need. Wise people will carefully pick goods. If they are interested in knowledge, They go to Scientific counter, if they want wisdom, They go to  philosophy if they want to know higher truth ultimate reality ,They prefer religion but if they require material glory, Power and authority ,they go to records of war ,conquest, expansion ,tyranny ,exploitation . History is a storehouse of human experience and knowledge, The 19^th Century is “the century of history” It has humanised history and made it a century of reality and thought.          

A Brief History of Department :

          The department of history is a part of faculty of Arts, initiated in 1988-89 with Hons. In 1994 with the aim and objective of making the study of history in a critical and scientific way and fit our young generation in to the process of globalisation. The department of provides learning of history at Degree level as Elective, Pass and above all Hons.  The department also provides Education in “Indian Society and Culture” As compulsory Subject to final year Students of Arts stream. As there is a general Concept that History is a study of past and if is merely a catalogue of events serialised in a descriptive manner overloaded with account of dates, it is very much difficult on the part of the department to attract more students. In spite of this the brilliant faculties of this department have worked diligently and take initiatives to impart teaching of history in scientific way and inculcating passion and interest among the students for study of history. The motto is not to love the past, not to condemn the past nor to be free from the past but to master the past in order to understand its bearing on the present.

Ø    To provide a sound knowledge on history to know the entire human past.

Ø    To present the ideas in a lucid manner.

Ø    To Present historical facts and events of part in analytical, descriptive manner & explain the need of  studying history.

Ø    To get the past event revalue in the light of new ideas.

Ø    To apply new methods keeping pace with fresh developments archaeology like statistics, graphology etc.
